Speedway, I like thousands of others grew up every week at Tralee,Fraser Park or what ever else you wanted to call it during the Glory Days of Speedway here in the ACT.
Remember waiting in that long line before the gates were open just to get your usual spot parked on either the North or Southern bank. Watching all the cars being unloaded and prepared for the entertaining night ahead.
Or were you unloading, checking tyre pressures, checking levels and getting rid of those gremlin's that magically appeared as you were unloading?
It really does not matter how you were involved the fact of the matter and the thing that did matter was that you like thousands of others were involved! Yes thats right thousands of others enjoying the sport the same as you, the cool breeze as the sun was going down and the sweet smell of race fuel in the air, if you think about it life just didn't get any better than that now did it.
So what happened !
Yes I know life can sometimes get in the way of following and doing what you really want but how long are you going to use that statement as an excuse, that's right it's just an excuse for not getting out and having a go.
Yes the once great Tralee / Fraser Park has turned to rubble waiting for the developers to put another over priced suburb over it and the crowds that you were part of have long gone, BUT where? Thats right where has everyone gone ? There were thousands every week watching Speedway meetings right here in the ACT.
It's hard to imagine for some, especially the young and the new residents of Canberra, as they don't have any idea that any motorsport has or does exist in Canberra as it has very little support from any tourisim or Government departments.
But however if you want to know about bowls, cricket, art, flowers or dining just check out most Tourism web sites, go on do a search for motorsport, I bet you don't get any results. Try Speedway even less of chance.
But those in the know will tell you that you can still see some great speedway action right here in the good old ACT - see the page for National Capital Speedway.
That's right the time has come to stop making excuses why you can't get out and watch or compete again because September is on it's way and so is the start of the new Speedway season.
Lets see some of the faces from ten or more years ago back at the track again because if you go once you know you will go again don't you, oh yea don't forget to take the family and let you kids enjoy what you enjoyed as a kid all them years ago, there is nothing quiet like GOING FAST AND TURNING LEFT
